Years of Experience
Particular thanks go to M. Baras, project statistician, for his devotion and tireless work in the planning and preparation of the sample, for the many odd jobs he willingly undertook, and for his cheerful mood when things were most difficult.
I was extremely lucky in meeting Mario in the early stages of my research. My debt to Mario is singular and incalculable. Not only has he been an approachable and talented teacher, but his tolerance towards my clumsy attempts to understand the art of statistics is unique. He has become an indispensable support in the construction and analysis of many of my research programs. When confronted by a research problem that seems insurmountable, I go to Mario. With improbable patience and subtle humor he will ask question after question, elegantly sifting and organizing the random threads of ideas. When he finally suggests the solution, each thread has been woven into a beautiful rug. The striking clarity of his statistical mind and his capability and willingness to guide an untrained person along the path of comprehension is a gift indeed.
Mario is an excellent statistician with a solid theoretical background and a lot of experience in applied statistics as well. As you can see from his C.V. and list of publications, he has done solid work in both fields; he has also done a large amount of consulting work – and he has done it in a creative as well as thorough manner.
Not only is Mario a first-class theoretical biostatistician but he is one of the best teachers of statistics I have ever come across. Our MPH students consistently voted him the best teacher in the School of Public Health.
A heartfelt thank you to Dr. Baras for transforming an endless quantity of data into solid science.
Most important: I forgot to mention that the order for the Eldicus triage score manuscript was determined by contributions to the study and the manuscript. This especially goes for Mario who has been not only the statistician performing the analyses, but he has been involved in the study from the time we sent in the application for a grant. He has been the individual who came up with the previous method to develop the score and when there were problems with that method, he came up with the present solution.
